A pack of 12 A4 posters covering the spelling rules: The /f/, /l/, /s/, /z/ and /k/ sounds are usually spelt as ff, ll, ss, zz and ck if they come straight after a single vowel letter in short words. The /ŋ/ sound can be spelt n before k. The /tʃ/ sound is usually spelt as tch if it comes straight after a single vowel letter. English words hardly ever end with the letter v, so if a word ends with a /v/ sound, the letter e usually needs to be added after the ‘v’. The /f/ sound is not usually spelt as ph in short everyday words (e.g. fat, fill, fun). ‘wh’ can make the same sound as ‘w’. This pack is a collection of PowerPoints and printable resources in pdf to help children recognise the initial sounds in words. (Not to be confused with later alliterative activities the children do in KS1 and KS2 when they can already recognise letters and read words.) They can be helped to do this by tuning into speech sounds; firstly with the initial sound of the letter and later by recognising other sounds in word such as the middle a and t in cat.
